You walk past your outdoor AC unit on a hot day and notice something's off: the system is running — maybe even humming — but the fan on top isn't spinning. An AC fan that won't turn is one of the most common summer service calls we get across the Charlotte region, and the cause usually falls into a handful of buckets. Here's what's going on and what you can safely check.
First, a quick triage. Is the outdoor fan stopped while the unit hums? Is the indoor blower silent so no air comes from the vents? Or is nothing running at all? Each points somewhere different — and the hum-but-no-spin case is the classic.
The most common culprit: a failed capacitor. The capacitor is a small, inexpensive part that gives the fan motor its starting jolt. When it weakens or fails, the motor hums but can't start. This is far and away the number-one cause — and the good news is it's one of the cheapest AC repairs there is when caught early. (Some people know the trick of spinning the blades with a stick to start a weak-capacitor fan — if that works, it confirms the diagnosis, but the fix is still a new capacitor, not a daily stick ritual.)
Other causes: a burned-out fan motor (often after years of running with a weak capacitor), a tripped breaker, a failed contactor that isn't sending power, debris physically jamming the blades, or — if the indoor blower is the one not spinning — a blower motor or control board issue. A frozen system can also shut things down; if you see ice, turn it off and let it thaw.
What you can safely do: check the breaker, make sure the thermostat is actually calling for cooling, clear visible debris from around (not inside) the unit, and swap a clogged filter. What you shouldn't do: open the electrical panel on the unit. Capacitors store a charge even with the power off, and they bite. This is one repair that's genuinely worth the service call.
