A healthy air conditioner runs in long, steady cycles — typically 15 to 20 minutes or more — then rests. If yours starts, runs a few minutes, shuts off, and starts again a few minutes later, that's short cycling. It's one of the most damaging patterns an AC can fall into, and in the humid Carolinas it has a bonus penalty: a system that never runs long enough to pull moisture out of the air leaves your home clammy even when the thermostat is satisfied.
Why it matters. Starting is the hardest thing a compressor does; each start-up draws a surge of current and stresses the motor. A system cycling three times as often wears out three times as fast, uses more electricity, and never reaches the steady state where it dehumidifies properly. Short cycling is frequently the story behind a compressor that fails years early.
The common causes, from cheapest to most expensive. A clogged air filter or blocked return restricts airflow, causing the evaporator coil to get too cold, ice over, and trip the system — check the filter first. A frozen coil from any cause (dirty coil, low refrigerant, failed blower) does the same. Low refrigerant from a leak causes pressure safeties to trip. A failing capacitor makes the compressor struggle and cut out. A dirty or failing contactor or a loose electrical connection interrupts power. A thermostat located in a bad spot or failing can call and cancel rapidly. A clogged condensate drain trips the float switch, which shuts the system down until the pan drains — then it runs again.
The cause nobody wants to hear: the system is too big. An oversized air conditioner cools the house so fast that it satisfies the thermostat in a few minutes and shuts down, over and over, never running long enough to dehumidify. This is extremely common in our region, where "bigger is better" installs were routine for decades. If your system has short cycled since the day it was installed and your house feels humid in summer, oversizing is a strong suspect — and it's why we insist on a proper load calculation before replacing any system.
What you can check yourself: replace the filter, make sure every supply and return vent is open and unblocked, look for ice on the refrigerant lines or indoor coil (if you see it, turn the system off and let it thaw), check the condensate drain pan for standing water, and make sure the thermostat isn't in direct sun or next to a vent. If none of that helps, stop resetting and call — continued short cycling is actively shortening your compressor's life.
