Changing your air filter is the single easiest and cheapest thing you can do to keep your heating and cooling system healthy — and it's the one job most homeowners forget. So how often should you actually do it? For a standard one-inch filter, the general rule is every 30 to 90 days. For thicker four- or five-inch media filters, every six to twelve months is usually fine.

Where you fall in that range depends on your home. If you have pets, run the system year-round, have anyone with allergies or asthma, or you've had recent construction or remodeling, lean toward the shorter end and check the filter monthly. Here in North Carolina, our heavy spring pollen and humid summers can clog filters faster than you'd expect, so it's worth a look more often than you might think.

Why does it matter so much? A clean filter lets air move freely through your system. A clogged one chokes off airflow, which forces your furnace or AC to work harder, drives up your energy bills, and can even cause the system to overheat in winter or freeze up in summer. Over time, that extra strain shortens the life of expensive equipment.

There's an air-quality payoff, too. Your filter traps dust, pollen, pet dander, and other particles before they circulate through your home. A fresh filter simply does that job better — something every household in Gastonia, Lincolnton, Denver, or anywhere across the region can appreciate come allergy season.

Checking a filter takes about two minutes: slide it out, hold it up to the light, and if you can't see through it clearly, replace it. And if you'd rather never think about it again, ask us about our Energy Savings Agreement — our maintenance plan includes seasonal tune-ups where we handle the filter, catch small problems early, and keep your system running at its best.
