Your system is running — you can hear the outdoor unit or the burners firing — but little or no air is coming from the vents. That's the classic sign of a blower motor problem. The blower is the motor and wheel inside your furnace or air handler that pushes conditioned air through the ducts, and it works every single time the system runs, in both heating and cooling seasons. Here's what it costs when it fails.
Two kinds of motors, two price ranges. Older and basic systems use a PSC (permanent split capacitor) motor: simple, single-speed, and inexpensive. Newer and higher-efficiency systems use an ECM (electronically commutated motor) — variable-speed, quieter, and much more efficient, but considerably more expensive to replace. Knowing which you have is the first question in any quote.
The cost. Replacing a PSC blower motor typically runs about $400–$900 installed. An ECM or variable-speed motor usually runs $800–$2,000, occasionally more on premium systems, because the motor itself is costlier and often includes an integrated control module. If the motor is under the manufacturer's parts warranty (commonly 10 years on registered equipment), you may pay labor only — typically $250–$500.
Sometimes it's not the motor. A blower that won't run can also be a failed capacitor (a $150–$400 fix), a bad relay or control board, a tripped limit switch, or a loose belt on very old units. A blower that runs but moves little air may just be a badly clogged filter or a dirty blower wheel. A competent diagnosis rules those out before you buy a motor.
Symptoms that it's failing: weak airflow from the vents, a system that runs but never quite reaches temperature, a humming or buzzing sound from the indoor unit, a burning or hot electrical smell, the motor running loud or squealing, or the blower cutting out intermittently. A furnace that overheats and shuts down on its limit switch is often a blower moving too little air.
Repair or replace? If the rest of the system is under 10 years old, replace the motor. If it's a 15-year-old system and you're quoted a four-figure ECM replacement, it's worth pricing a new air handler or system — you may be surprised how close the numbers are, and you'd get a full new warranty and better efficiency.
