Do You Need an HVAC Surge Protector?

North Carolina sees plenty of thunderstorm days each year, and the Charlotte region gets its full share. Most homeowners protect their TV and computer with a power strip — and leave the most expensive appliance in the house, their HVAC system, completely exposed. An HVAC surge protector is one of the cheapest pieces of insurance in this trade.

What it protects against: lightning strikes are the dramatic version, but they're not the common one. Far more damage comes from routine power events — utility switching, downed lines, transformer issues, and the surges created inside your own home every time a large motor cycles on. These smaller surges don't fry equipment instantly; they degrade sensitive electronics over months and years until something fails "for no reason."

What's at risk: modern HVAC systems are full of electronics — control boards, variable-speed motor drives, communicating thermostats, and inverter-driven compressors. Those components are far more surge-sensitive than the simple relays and contactors in a 1990s system, and they're expensive. A fried control board can run several hundred dollars; a damaged inverter compressor can total the outdoor unit.

How it works: a hardwired surge protector installs at the outdoor unit's disconnect (and often at the air handler too), sensing overvoltage and diverting the excess to ground before it reaches your equipment. It's a small device, installed in well under an hour, and it protects the system continuously.

Worth knowing: surge damage is a common warranty exclusion. Manufacturers generally don't cover it, and homeowners insurance often applies your deductible — so the repair frequently lands squarely on you.
