R-454B Refrigerant: What the Change Means for Your AC

New systems sold since 2025 use a different refrigerant. Here's what changed, whether your current system is affected, and what it means when you replace.

If you've shopped for a new AC or heat pump recently, you've probably seen R-454B on the spec sheet and wondered what happened to R-410A. Here's a plain-English explanation of the change, and — more importantly — what it does and doesn't mean for the system you already own.

What changed. Under the federal AIM Act, the U.S. is phasing down high-GWP hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants. GWP stands for Global Warming Potential, a measure of a gas's climate impact relative to carbon dioxide. R-410A, the standard residential refrigerant for roughly two decades, has a GWP around 2,088. Beginning January 1, 2025, newly manufactured residential air conditioners and heat pumps had to use refrigerant with a GWP under 700. R-454B, with a GWP of roughly 466, became the replacement most major manufacturers chose — Carrier, Trane, Lennox, and Rheem among them. Daikin went with R-32 (GWP around 675). Both are legitimate; they're just different choices.

The most important point: your existing R-410A system is fine. R-410A was not banned, and you are not required to replace anything. The phasedown applies to manufacturing new equipment, not to operating or servicing what's already installed. Your system can be repaired, recharged, and maintained normally for the rest of its service life. Anyone telling you that you must replace a working R-410A system because of this rule is misinforming you.

What is fair to expect is that R-410A gets gradually more expensive as production winds down and supply shifts toward reclaimed refrigerant. That's a reason to fix leaks promptly rather than topping off year after year — which was always the right approach anyway — but it isn't a reason to panic-replace equipment.

About the flammability question. R-454B is classified A2L, meaning "mildly flammable." That sounds alarming and generally isn't: A2L refrigerants are difficult to ignite, require specific concentrations and an ignition source, and have been used safely in other parts of the world for years. What it does mean is real: technicians need updated training, tools, and procedures, and new systems include leak detection and safety features built to updated codes. It's a legitimate reason to make sure whoever services your system is properly trained on A2L equipment.

You cannot mix or convert. R-454B is not a drop-in replacement for R-410A. The two operate at different pressures and use different oils and components, and mixing refrigerants damages equipment and makes proper diagnosis impossible. If you're replacing an outdoor unit, you generally need to replace the matched indoor coil as well — a mismatched pairing performs poorly, may void the warranty, and often isn't code-compliant.

What it means at replacement time: new-system prices rose somewhat with the transition, driven by the refrigerant itself, redesigned components, and the added safety features. Efficiency, though, has generally held steady or improved — many R-454B systems perform as well as or better than the R-410A models they replaced. If you're comparing quotes, ask which refrigerant the equipment uses, confirm the indoor and outdoor units are a matched set, and verify your contractor is A2L-certified.
